The Alocasia Zebrina owes its name to the special zebra print on his stems. The extraordinary stems in combination with its beautiful green leaves are characteristic of the Alocasia Zebrina.
The lovely heart-shaped leaves also call to mind the floppy ears of an elephant. For that reason the plant is also called “Elephant ear plant”. Its leaves are as fascinating as its stems, thanks to their funnel-like concavity, and pronounced veins that are not unlike those seen on a human body.
Originally from Southeast Asia, this exotic plant is familiar with the rainforest floor – meaning it loves a moist, humid environment – and its large leaves will follow the path of light (so be sure to rotate yours once in while).
Alocasia Zebrina doesn’t like dryness at the roots, but too much water will cause the roots to rot. Unlike conventional house plant watering wisdom the best approach is to water little but often. For best results, plant yours in a pot with a drainage hole so any excess water can easily escape.
It will do well in a warm, brightly lit spot, but be warned, too much direct sunlight will burn its waxy leaves. It prefers a spot that receives indirect sunlight around a corner, or through a set of blinds.
It becomes dormant in the winter months so don’t worry if it is not showing signs of growth, just wait for the spring.
