The Wentii (or Hardy elephant ear) is a member of the hip Alocasia family and comes from the tropical jungles of Southeast Asia. It is a very impressive and ornamental plant with large leaves which can reach up to a foot in length, deep green on top with a spectacularly contrasting metallic purple-bronze colour to their undersides.
This impressive foliage provides a wonderful backdrop to richly coloured flowers in any garden and makes them a striking houseplant. Give this plant a nice place in your interior and ensures that everyone is impressed.
Originally from Southeast Asia, this exotic plant is familiar with the rainforest floor – meaning it loves a moist, humid environment – and its leaves will follow the path of light (so be sure to rotate yours once in while). Alocasia doesn’t like dryness at the roots, but too much water will cause the roots to rot. Unlike conventional house plant watering wisdom the best approach is to water little but often. For best results, plant yours in a pot with a drainage hole so any excess water can easily escape.
It will do well in a warm, brightly lit spot, but be warned, too much direct sunlight will burn its waxy leaves. It prefers a spot that receives indirect sunlight around a corner, or through a set of blinds.
It becomes dormant in the winter months so don’t worry if it is not showing signs of growth, just wait for the spring.
Please note that the photo is indicative, each plant has different shape and size.
