Calathea plants are part of the family of plants known as Marantaceae, native to the tropical Americas and Africa.
They are famous for their wide, green, colorful leaves. These wide leaves make them popular for areas of low light. Low light plants have broad leaves to absorb and use as much light as they can get. In nature, they are found in jungles and at the base of trees.
Calathea Musaica (or Network) has amazing leave patterns that resemble tiny mosaics, hence the name. The pattern is so intricate that most people is checking if this plant is even real. Once you have a close look at the graphic, very detailed mosaic-leaf pattern, it’s almost hard to believe it’s all mother nature’s work.
Over the years, calatheas have become a very popular houseplant because their attractive leaves grab the attention of many plant owners. With so many species to chose from it has become one of the most popular houseplants to own. Calathea is familiar with the rainforest floor – meaning it loves a moist, humid environment. It’s highly sensitive to cold, drafts, and sudden temperature fluctuations. It grows best in warm, humid, and well-lit conditions, but it never does well in direct sunlight. Calathea must be kept in damp soil at all times, but definitely do not allow the plant to sit in water or in very wet soil. Think little and often as a watering policy.
