Disocactus anguliger is commonly known by the names Fishbone Cactus or Zig Zag Cactus after its characteristic fishbone-shaped, zig-zagging foliage. It was also well known by the name Epiphyllum anguliger, however it was recently reclassified and is now included in the genus Disocactus.
This epiphytic cactus has a smooth green skin and extensively branched stems. The primary stems are often woody. Secondary stems are flat and succulent, 20–30 cm long, 3–5 cm wide, and deeply lobed. The lobes are rectangular or slightly rounded. The white or pale yellow flowers bloom nocturnally, exuding a strong, sweet scent; they are 6–20 cm long and 6–7 cm wide.
This species originates from Mexico and is commonly grown as an ornamental plant both outdoors in frost-free climates and also indoors as a popular houseplant. This unusual cactus is epiphytic and thus grows without the need for soil substrate, it’s naturally found in tropical forests, growing in the forks of tree branches or in rock crevices where enough humus has accumulated to retain moisture.
When grown indoors, it is important to keep it humid and warm during growing/flowering season.
It needs bright indirect light. Let it dry out between waterings, disocactus anguliger is a drought tolerant plant.
