The palm family (Arecaceae) is widespread throughout the tropics and partly in the subtropics as well. The species has almost all an unbranched stem, but there are exceptions. The leaves have a leaf base which forms a closed sheath. The fruit is a dry berry with 1-3 seeds. The main root is short and densely branched. The family was formerly called Palmaceae.
