Burning sage — also known as smudging — is an ancient spiritual ritual. For centuries, this simple-yet-mystical tradition—in which palo santo, sage aand other cleansing plants such as sweetgrass are burned to signify the start of a ritual—has been used by a multitude of spiritual faiths, including Hindus, Buddhists, and indigenous cultures in North and South America.
Burning California white sage (Salvia apiana) is well known for its ability to purify and cleanse. It creates a calming ritual that helps release stagnant energy that can breed negativity. White sage can be burned for many reasons, including moving into a new home, after a period of illness, starting a new chapter in your life, or simply refreshing your energy before daily meditation.
Dragon’s blood resin, extracted from the Calamarus Draco tree, has been treasured for centuries for its strong protective and amplifying qualities. When combined with sage, it enhances the cleansing ritual by creating a deeper energetic shield and strengthening intentions. Traditionally used for protection and spiritual empowerment, dragon’s blood leaves the atmosphere feeling purified, grounded, and energetically fortified.
Light the end of the bundle with a match. Blow out quickly if it catches on fire. The tips of the leaves should smolder slowly, releasing thick smoke. Direct this smoke around your space with one hand while holding the bundle in the other. Allow the incense to linger on the areas you’d like to focus on. The glow will end on its own unless you blow on the ember which will keep the smoke going. You can re-light any time and reuse it. Allow the ash to collect in a fire proof bowl.
It’s also important to leave a window open before, during, and after smudging. This allows smoke to escape.
