S16 is more than just a chair; it is an industrial icon. Originally designed in the late 1950s and early 1960s, this chair became a staple of Dutch schools and public buildings due to its legendary durability and minimalist aesthetic. Today, it remains a timeless piece of functional design, perfectly suited for modern residential interiors, high-end restaurants, and creative workspaces.
Eschewing the traditional tubular steel of its era, Galvanitas pioneered the use of pressed sheet steel, resulting in a frame that is incredibly strong yet remarkably light. The seat and backrest are crafted from Pagholz, an indestructible composite material made from 20 layers of wood veneer impregnated with synthetic resin. This makes the chair not only scratch-resistant and easy to clean but also exceptionally comfortable, as the wood retains a natural flexibility.
This version with the armrests pairs the warmth of a Pearl copper powder-coated frame with the deep, sophisticated tone of an Ebony seat. The metallic glow of the copper creates a striking contrast with the dark wood, offering a look that is both “urban industrial” and elegantly refined.
